I got an IUD inserted and it's not where it should be, why?

I was told to schedule an ultrasound a month from now to see if it adjusts. What happens if it doesn't adjust? Can my doctor adjust it beforehand? And if so, why wait? I'm getting married the week after that appointment and need to know if I have to find another form of birth control.
