Is it possible to bleed while on birth control??

Ok so I started my birth control for the first time with my last period. It lasted for about 5 days. I had intercourse about a day later and i started to bleed but it wasn't like having my period. It lasted about 2 days with a mixture of bright red and brown blood. but not heavy at all. Then it started happening again about a week later. Can this be because of my birth control?? I don't think i would be pregnant because i have not had intercourse since that day.
