Just two questions about Depot Provera

I am on Depo Provera and I received my first shot on July 3rd due to having a complex cyst on my ovary. Since this injection was given more for medical reasons than for birth control I did not get while I was menstruating. I actually got it 8 days after the START of my period. The nurse who gave me the injection told me that since I didn't get it during my period I'd have to wait a full month until I was protected. So I waited a month and one day to be exact and began having unprotected sex with my husband.

What is stressing me out is that my friend told me that I should have waited until I got my 2nd shot because she knows a girl who did what I was doing and she got pregnant. I know I should trust the nurse over someone who knows someone, but I'm just a little paranoid. So I was just wondering how effective is the shot when you don't get it during your period like you're suppose to?

Also I have another question that's sort of silly. I only have one ovary due to losing the other one from having endo and I was wondering if the birth control would be more powerful due to it working only on one ovary instead of two? The reason I ask is because the rather large complex cyst disappeared within two weeks of the injection and I haven't gotten my period at all since the shot so I assume I didn't ovulate. So to me it seemed to work rapidly.

Any help at all would be appreciated!

I did not get depo during my period, but because of it, I had a 4 month period afterwards. I think that it one of those situations that depends on the woman.
