how fast does the birth controll work

i'm 17 years old. i had unprotected sex a couple times right after each other. then i had a pregnancy scare. I went to the doctor and the doctor said i was not preganent. he put me on the pill on sunday the 17 in july and my period was due around the 21 of july but i never got the period. my mom told my that from the moment u start taking the pill for the first 3 weeks u shouldn't get ur period if that makes any sense cause it doesn't to me. does it work that fast or am i possibly pregnanct

I was recommended when I switched the pill that it takes about a month even if you start directly on the first day of your cycle, just as a precaution.

If you do not start taking your pills on the first day of your cycle (as is your case), then it's recommended that you use another contraceptive for 7 days. Also your period can be delayed until you start the placebo pills, so I think it's normal that your period didn't show up when expected.
