okay to start birth control early?

here we go: my boyfriend left on course with the military, and I was wanting to change my brand of birth control. I thought since he would be gone for a couple months, I could just go off birth control for the first month, and start up with a different brand the next month. the problem: I am not getting my period! I have taken pregnancy tests, and I am not pregnant ( have not had sex since september and had a cycle right after he left, i went off the birth control after this). He is going to be back a month from now, and I need to get on the birth control but going off of it in the first place has messed my system up. Would it be okay for me to just start taking the pill anyways? It says to start on the sunday of or the 5 day after your period, but I feel as though if I'm going to be sexually active I should be on it.... is it safe to take the pill before my period?

it would be ok. but its not going to work for a month or more anyways. and even still you need to use condoms as women have goten pregnant on the pill and stds are out there.

it still might be working by the time he does. use condoms and start the birth control. mind you you can still get pregnant on the pill and you would not have been taking it long so that increases your chance

I am planning on starting the birth control tomorrrow, still no sign of a cycle.  Will this just change the week that I normally get my period? I've gotten a few mixed answers but I dono't want to screw my period up too much, i'm a little worried but I know i've got to get onto it pronto.
