Hi there. Polycythemia vera is a bone marrow disorder which produces too much production of white, red blood cells and platelets. The symptoms are difficulty in breathing in the supine position, dizziness, headache, red coloring of face, fatigue etc.
It can be evaluated by bone marrow biopsy, complete blood count with differential, erythropoietin levels, vitamin B12 levels.
Treatment would include phlebotomy to decrease blood thickness, one pint every week to heep hematocrit less than 45. Chemotherapy with hydroxyurea, interferon, anegrelide, blood thinners are all uses.
Could you please clarify what you meant by A/fib? Atrial fibrillation or afibrinogenenmia? I would be able to reply to this.
