Pulmonary embolism, why is mine so different

I had a complete hysterectomy in jan.2011 6 days later i had a pulmonary embolism. My doctors all said the same thing as each of them came in to see me"you must have an angel sitting on your shoulder because you really shouldnt be here right now" I have been on warfarin ever since I have come off for 25 days so i can have the genetic testing done to see if i have a clotting problem but as soon as i go back to the doctor she made it clear she feels i need warfarin for the rest of my life even if there isnt a clotting problem, she said her decision is based on my age (46) the circumstances behind the surgery(the fact that it was done quickly(35 minutes) there were no complications and the fact that i got up immediately after surgery and walked the corridor every couple of hours. most people stay on warfarin 6-12 months after a pe why is my case so different.

A pulmonary embolism is a listed risk of a hysterectomy. However, you may be more prone to blood clots and it could be from genetics to high homocysteine levels.  High homocysteine is known to increase the risk of blood clots. Worth testing this amino acid as well.  A healthy homocysteine level is around the 6 umol/L mark.  Vitamin B6, B9 and B12 lower homocysteine levels.

Your doctor sounds cautious and it may be warranted. Were you given any anti-clotting drugs?  I personally had surgery last year and the nurses gave me quite a few anti clotting injections during my 3 day stay in hospital.

Just to note, the side effects associated with warfarin (such as coumadin) blood thinners are numerous and well documented. They include haemorrhage - internal bleeding, abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, fatigue and lethargy, feeling cold and chills, liver damage, loss of hair, nausea. While you may want to stay on this drug for the year, the side effects are offputting to say the least.

There is an alternative called nattokinase. Nattokinase is a potent fibrinolytic (anti-clotting) enzyme extracted and highly purified from a traditional Japanese food called Natto.  Researchers have found that Nattokinase is four times more potent than plasmin, works more effectively than warfarin drugs, and doesn’t produce any side effects.
