Hi there. Show your daughter to a gynecologist and the source and cause of this exaggerated monthly bleeding needs to be identified since it would cause continuous bleeding and anemia if not corrected. Whether this is dysfunctional uterine bleeding or fibroids, needs to be ascertained and corrected. to correct the iron deficiency anemia, increase the intake of iron like meat, poultry and fish, fruits nuts, legumes, enriched cereals and grains, spinach and egg yolks. Iron supplements as advised by the doctor, on an empty stomach. If unable to absorb iron due to celiac sprue, intravenous iron infusions may be advocated. Since your hemoglobin is very low, hence parenteral infusion is advised to correct the loss fast. take care.
I have not heard of it in someone so young.
But I am actually dealing with the same thing. My latest HGB was 5.8, In Jan of 2006 I had a blood transfusion because it was 7, It went up to 10 never higher. I had another one last year in July because it was 7 again. :Last week I went in because I can tell when it gets low and had a CBC done and it came back 5.8 As I stated I also deal with the same type of menstrual cycle, but they will last anywhere from 10-14 days and yes very heavy with sever clotting. I am now going in to discuss my options with my Doctors and It looks like we are considering a hysterectomy. No they have never been able to tell me why it happens. and all of the things we have tried thus far have only worked for a month or two. I suggest you talk with your GYN because it will not get better on its own. There are treatments, and since she is so young maybe they will be all she needs. good luck to you and your daughter.
