Sudden blood rush from head to body with weakness

Hi, I have a condition since past 2 months. It happens randomly at any time. I feel a blood rush happening from my head to the body, till the waist, with a chill. I can actually feel it move through the body. This does in around 15-20 seconds. When this happens, I feel extreme weakness, in my body(feel like low BP) and also get a bad dream in my mind, that I had seen sometime in the past in sleep. All this happens when I am conscious and doing something. After around a minute or 2 I get back to normal. But it is very severe, and worries me a lot. Am I having a medical condition?

Hi!
What you suffer from is probably a vasovagal syncope or a vasovagal attack. The complex group of symptoms are mediated by the vagus nerve. This nerve is irritated by prolonged standing, standing up suddenly, stress, pain, hunger, dehydration, intense emotion etc.  Since it does not always happen, go back to the few episodes and see what the trigger was. Try and avoid the trigger which may be as simple as standing up suddenly on an empty stomach. Sit down immediately and place your head between the knees. Let the episode pass. Also this needs a detailed evaluation of heart and nervous system. A tilt table test, holter monitor, echocardiogram etc are done for confirmed diagnosis. Certain lifestyle changes such as raising the head end of bed while sleeping, avoiding sudden change in postures, avoiding an empty stomach, doing moderate isometric and aerobic exercises etc usually help. Certain medications can be given to increase the tone of the blood vessels. Treating the underlying cardiac or neurogenic cause also helps. Drink plenty of water, clear soups, juices (fresh), and herbal tea etc.
Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!

Thank you very much, doctor. I have a very strong feeling now that my symptoms are of vasovagal syncope after I read more about it seeing your reply. I shall follow your suggestions with food and lifestyle for sometime and shall do the necessary tests if the attacks recur. When I think back about the possible trigger that had caused the attack for the first time, I was in deep stress with many problems I faced when I was leaving my previous job. I shall try and completely avoid any thoughts related to the same. I am extremely thankful to you for your reply and guidance. God bless.
