Unexplained Petechiae in Toddler

Unexplained Petechiae in Toddler

My 2 year old has unexplained petechaie spots appearing on his body.  He gets about 10 spots a day, those fade and then he gets new ones.  The spots are mainly on his underarm, back, and shoulders.  But now a few of them have showed up inside his mouth (cheek) and on his face.  Sometimes they are clustered together and sometimes it is just a spot here and there.  He had 2 rounds of bloodwork that came back normal.  He did have a virus about 2 weeks ago (no fever, just a viral respitory infection).  They also checked him for strep too that was negative.  The strep test was done because 2 weeks before the petechiae started he had a very bad rash that was believed to be from an allergy.  A mixture of hydrocorisone and miconozole was used for about 2 weeks or so to take away the rash along with Zyrtec.  The petechiae was not present until he had this rash.  Could the hydrocoritsone have weakened his skin in that short of amount of time?  The petechiae is more prominent in the spots the cream was applied, but he is also getting them in different areaas as well.   He is a happy, active little boy with no other complaints, not the best eater, but it is unlikely that he has any vitamin deficienies.  Any thoughts?

Hello,
Petechiae are pinpoint-sized red dots under the surface of the skin. They are common after skin trauma and viral infections. They should go away in a few days. But if they persist then please consult a physician and get other causes ruled out which include allergic reaction, autoimmune diseases, thrombocytopenia, ITP or leukemias.

I suggest you to consult a hematologist and get it evaluated.

My sincere advice is to get it examined from a hematologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Thank you,
We do have an appointment with a hematologist set up in a few weeks.  The major concentrations of these spots are in the areas where the hydrocortisone cream was rubbed in, so we are thinking this is most likely the cause, as far as the random ones around other parts of his body, we're just not sure.  If anything comes to light after his additional bloodwork, I will post an update.
Thanks!

We received my son's lab results.  All results were normal including a CBC, CBC smear, platelet aggregation and von Wildebrandt's test.  She said that it is possible that his skin is just ultrasensitive to bruising in this way.
