Hi Doctor,
I had recently visual aura with no head ache...As I already had retinal detachment on one eye ...I rushed to emergency and doctors confirmed thats not related to retina.....I had carotid doppler which returned normal...I then reffered to neurologist
1)MRI brain normal
2)Cholestrol --border line
3)Homocysteine ---very elevated --88.5
Do I need to worry about elevated homocystene levels.
They diagnoised migrane aura with no head ache ..but i never had head ache in my life
And I was taking medication to lower my elevated homocystene
None of the eyedoctors/neuro unable to diganose what caused this visual aura and started treating for migrane and homocystene as risk factor
1)Do I need to worry about elevated homocystene levels.
What you are experiencing are probably typical ophthalmic migraines commonly called as ocular migraines, since these only cause visual symptoms without headaches. Normally, ophthalmic migraines do not require treatment. But if these symptoms recur regularly then you may need medication to reduce the frequency and/or severity of attacks. Retinal detachment is another cause, which has been ruled out in your case.
Yes, you should worry about increased homocystine levels as this can increase your risk of blood clots, atherosclerosis, heart disease, deep vein thrombosis, and stroke. Since you had visual aura, you must get a complete eye examination to rule out possibility of a threatened optic stroke. Take care!
