hemochromatosis with high T SAT % but normal ferritin

I just found out I have hemochromatosis (homozous c282y) My transferrin saturation is 90% but my ferrritin is only 71. I went to see a hemotologist and she said because my ferritin was normal she would just check it every year. My quesiton is how high can your T SAT go... 100% and can it really have no effect on my body?

Hi there. Hematochromatisis is diagnosed by few tests like transferring saturation TS, a percentage of SI/TIBC. Safe range is 12-44%. Any value above this is diagnostic of hemochromatosis and below this is a sign of bleeding ulcer or cancer. Other tests are serum ferritin, the normal range being 5-150. The next is Unbound iron binding capacity, UIBC, safe range is 146, below this needs treatment for hematochromatosis. You must be under your hematologist’s continuous supervision and monitoring. Take care.
