high ferritin

Hi was wondering if you could help my aunt has been told she is a carrier of hemocromotosis. She is 51% she has been told to get her children and siblings tested. my dad has had to go and the doctor has tested his ferririn and LFT levels. He has been told to make an appointment to see the doctor as his ferritin level is high hid LFT levels were ok. The doctor has taken my blood FBC ferritin level and LFT levels still waiting on results and he has told us to tell my brother to get tested could my dad have hemocromotosis as well. He does have athritis type symptoms in his first 2 fingers and knees also suffers abdominal pain and right hand side pain and he complains of feeling a lump on that side but had a fall a few years ago at work and blames that he isnt one for visiting the doctor but we are a bit concerened because his ferritin levels have came back high.

Hi thank you his ferritin level was 574 he has to go for gene tests and a lot of other test to determine if it is hemocromotosis. My bloods came back ok but doc told me to get them repeated after my periods stop as my aunt was tested about 20 years ago and was negative to hemocromotosis and now she is positive but think I am just going to ask for gene test.

Hi!

Ferritin levels are high in hemochromatosis, inflammation, liver disease, and some types of cancer, and in patients who have had multiple transfusions. If your father has normal LFT then probably liver causes are ruled out. If he is otherwise fit then cancer and multiple transfusions are ruled out. So, yes, hemochromatosis is a possibility. Let the doctors get back to you. Take care!
