Hi there. Low platelet count can be found in many clinical settings apart from the ones you mentioned. It could be a decreased production, increased consumption or splenic sequestration. Decreased platelet production is due to a bonemarrow problem and affects the res and white blood cells too. These are viral infections like parvo virus, rubella, mumps, Epstein barr, hepatitis C, aplastic anemia due to radiation if received, thiazide diuretics can suppress platelet production, long term alcohol, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency.
Increased destruction of platelets can be seen due to both immune and non immune related conditions. Certain drugs like sulphonamides, carbamazepine, quinine, acetaminophen and rifampin can all cause drug induced thrombocytopenia.
Certain rheumatological conditions like SLE and other connective tissue disorders, blood transfusion all can be responsible.
Advanced liver disease can lead to splenic sequestration.
Consult a hematologist for the needful investigation and management.
