How Soon Can a BPD Diagnosis Be Given?

by ginsa, Jul 02, 2009 10:04PM
I started seeing a new Pdoc in January and he diagnosed me with BPD after only one 15 minute session. I didn't realize that BPD was a real disorder until I recently looked it up. I thought it meant that I didn't fit into any particular category of mental illness, but partially fit into more than one.

I have read about BPD and I just don't see myself in the profile. Yeah, I can make a couple of the symptoms fit, but I think anyone might be able to do that at some time in their life. I can see the anger issues in me and some obsessive thoughts of hurting my ex and his gf, but I thought that given the betrayal and cruelty I suffered because of them that it was a fairly normal reaction.

Even my therapist thinks that I don't really fit the profile. I don't see how the Psych could make such a quick diagnosis. I don't really trust his judgment and he's not particularly interested in explaining his observations. I don't get it.

I agree w/ you that it's highly unlikely that a Dr. could diagnose you w/ BPD within 15 minutes. I would ask my therapist for a recomendation for a new psych. If your into self harm, I could see why he might want to make this diag. but you didn't mention that.

It depends on your history and also what information the doctor may have obtained from others and other sources (friends, family, T's, medical notes, etc).
A 15 minute session doesn't sound like a very thorough assessment.

If you see your T more often and she is experienced I would trust her and her opinion.  You could always ask for a second opinion.
