First off you may want to try a substance abuse forum. Readers there may have more experience dealing with such emotions.

I can tell you that after living with my pill popping alcoholic husband of 17 yrs, who I absolutely adored and probably would still be with today, if it wasn't for the fact that he decided to have an affair, is an absolute tragedy !!!!!

I thank God every day for that affair. It released me from that prison. I have been on my own now for 6 years and I raised my 4 children, 2 thru their teens and one is now 15 and struggling with weed.

I too am 47, he was my soulmate. I beleive even today that I will probably never replace him. but I'm still better offf being alone than being inside that craziness. Looking back it really never was a relationship, it was always about him trying to stay clean and me trying to help him do that and keeping life around him as stress free as possible. Yeah try doing that with 4 children, never a conflict eating my anger, my resentment all my emotions for almost 2 decades!!!

Good luck to you my dear, but if I was you, I'd think long and hard, take a good hard look at why your even in this relationship...what are you getting out of it, what is it that he is doing for you?? Marriage is a promise not to be taken lightly, so before you commit, be prepared for your jail sentence....
