Garbage Smell

For the past 6 months I had sinus issues but the last 2 months I've also had a garbage smell. Only I can smell it and it's off and on. I had a nasal scope done in the doctors office with no seen issues except I seem to have slightly more mucus in the cavity (clear). I was sent for CT Scan which I just found out was normal. The doctor now wants me to have an MRI of my brain since I still have a garbage smell and I've been on meds. My mouth has also been very dry and of course bad breath, I just attributed this to me being a diabetic, not putting it together with my other issue, can they be related and why scan my brain?

Yes, this was a thought to me also. I have a relative right now who is fighting for her life from a brain tumor. I know it could be totally unrelated to my issues but of course it is still a cause of worry. My MRI is the 3rd of Oct. so hopefully soon one way or another I'll know something. Thanks for all of the  comments, it is appreciated.

They may also want to see sinus cavities - like the sphenoid sinus - that cannot be scoped in the office.

I had an infection back in one of those - it was horrible.

Could possibly be checking for a brain tumour. Or any kind of sign of brain damage.

By no means am I saying that's what you have. So don't get all paranoid thinking you have a brain tumour. It is simply a suggestion to your question of why.

Whether it's related, I couldn't say for sure as I'm not a doctor
