MRI question

can someone explain this for me??

there is moderately severe enlargement of the lateral and third ventricles and there is moderately severe diffuse prominence of cerebral cortical sulci, with an appearance consistent with moderately severe age related central and contical brain atrophy.  There is no evidence of hydrocephalus.  There is severe involvement of the periventricular white matter regions by patchy and rounded T2 hyperintensities and a large number of additional rounded and patchy T2 hyperintensities seen scattered throughout  the deep frontoperietal white matter at the level of the centrum semiovale and corona radiata consistent with severe chronic microangiopathic white matter ischemic changes,.   Small patchy T2 hyperintensities are seen in the thalmi bilaterally also consistent with chronic ischemic disease.  A rounded 1cm region of T2 hyperintensity is seen adjacent to the left ventricular trigone.  It is of slightly greater T2 hyperintensities compared the remainder of the otehr white matter lesions.   The patient is an 83 yr old male - MRI study was done due to memory loss reported since beginning of the year.

Dear jean1166,

All these findings can be found relatively commonly in the elderly. They represent disease of the small vessels of the brain causing "ischemic changes" (decreased blood perfusion). They describe as severe though. Let me know if you have any other question.
