How Fast can the Brain Heal

While reading questions regarding Alcoholism, it's common for people to wonder if they have permanent brain damage. It's rare to hear the question, when will my brain heal?
Does the brain heal after alcohol abuse stops?

Yes, the brain starts healing when its owner starts taking good care of it.  The majority of brain recovery takes place in the first year of sobriety, but it can proceed in smaller increments for several more years.  Bear in mind that "sobriety" means complete, total, and continuous abstinence from alcohol and other drugs of abuse.  For someone with a serious enough alcohol problem to have done brain damage, moderate drinking is usually not an option.  The brain needs a chance to rest.
