also i read that answer from this site
Hi.  The effect of exposure to CT radiationCystitis - noninfectious
Radiation therapyhas been studied in children, and these have shown a 0.35% increased risk of developing cancer in general after a CT scan.  A head CT would increase the risk for developing brain cancer by 0.06%.  This means that one out of 1500 children who had head CT would be at risk for developing brain cancer later in life

does that mean im at risk
please help

If I understand this correctly, you are 24, and you had a CT five months ago.  You gave the stats for a child getting a CT (I think I am correct in assuming that at 24, you are an adult) so these stats do not apply...

Yes, there is a risk of radiation with a CT. You can, sadly, read almost anything and freak out about the risks - there is also high radiation in riding in an airplane (people do that everyday) and there is radiation in sunshine too...

Brain cancer is still pretty rare - even with exposure. Sure, you want to do what you can to minimize risk, but you still have to live and you still have to be able to do reasonable things like do occasional tests, ride on a plane or sit in the sun. So you can sit and worry about the risk of one CT that your doctor evaluated would be worth the risk (and you can decide, with your doctor if next time it is or not) or you can go out and live your life. Life is too short!

There are radiation trackers on the internet if you are really worried.

thank you rumpled
please just these 3 questions
and thank you soo much
1-is there any people in my age or maybe you khnow getting
head ct with and without contrast and nothing happened to them
or im alone in my age 24
2-lets say someone got an accident and need a head ct
sure he will get ct without contrast
but i got ct with and without contrast
does that mean my risk is double
a doctor told me with the same radiation you got 2 tests
other doctor told me you got 2 times radiation
do i got 1 ct with 2 times raidation
3-in the hospital they told me that ct scanner is new
the first of its kind in my country and its used much much less radiation than other
ct scanner
can that help
my test last 3 or 4 minutes
im sorry for these too many questions
please rumpled
thank you
thank you soo much for your time and your help

In most cases, the benefits of getting a CT scan far outweigh the risks (and the risks are minimal). They do not just order them for no reason.

I think what Rumpled was trying to point out is that the statistics you read regarding the risks of developing cancer are for *children*. At 24 years old, your brain is not developing like that of a child, which is why it is more important to minimize the radiation exposure in young children.

technically, since with and without contrast are 2 separate scans, I guess the radiation exposure is more. But I wouldn't worry if it was only that one scan. As Rumpled said, there are plenty of other things in our daily lives that expose us to radiation and pose more of a risk. But we don't walk around stressing about those factors (such as cell phones), so you really should worry so much about the risks that one CT may have caused, especially if it was an important diagnostic test. The thing with radiation exposure is that it is often a cumulative thing, and problems down the line, if they were caused by radiation, often cannot be blamed on a single thing like an xray or CT scan (unless, of course, it is due to something like radiation treatments for cancer).

And to answer your question, yes, I do know plenty of people who have had CT scans with contrast and are still fine.

(by the way, I have brain tumors and my prognosis is very good. I have also encountered many people with brain tumors who are also doing great. Not to down-play the seriousness of brain tumors, but it is not a death sentence.)

Hi Rola

Coincidently, last night I watched a tv program.  It’s about a community who are  worried about a plant which is soon to be built in their area.  They're worried of it's possible radiation exposure.  A group of independent body and a reported had made a thorough study and research and they convinced the community that radiation from the plant is very minimal.  They also showed that radiation is everywhere, at the bus station nearby, at the office buildings nearby and other several places nearby. They also traveled to other state of the country to further reconfirmed the existence of the radiation.  They showed the each readings to the tv screen direct from the instrument that they used in the research.  The radiation is everywhere but at a very low reading.

Hope the info above helps.

I have had 2 head ct’s and 3 mri’s since I was 19, and I’m okay.

Well I started getting CT scans, MRI with and without contrast since I was 23yrs old. I can say with all honesty in the last 17yrs I have had at least 15 combined due to head/neck issues, or other organ issues.

I did not get cancer, or brain tumor....hitting my 40's and still very much alive.....infact I just got another ct scan last month in the head neck area with and without contrast....

I am the same as Totie - I have had multiple head CTs, more than 20 MRIs, several body CTs and recently had a PET scan which loads you up with radiation. I had my first CT pretty young but I cannot even remember.

I even have a family history of brain cancer (which is why I try to help out here) with my Dad dying of brain cancer, a maternal uncle (talk about feeling doomed - hey both sides of the family!) and a cousin who is currently battling a case of cancerous brain tumor and is doing pretty well...

I don't have cancer. I am nearly 50.

I really dont think you should worried about ct scans and getting cancer from it...  you should just forget about it and move on before it turns into a bigger problem and you start  having anxiety over every little pain you get...  i really hope you move on with your life and dont stress about this anymore...

First, understand that I'm not a doctor but I'm kind of a book nerd and read a lot. First, understand that while people are getting diagnosed with primary brain tumors a little more frequently, primary brain tumors are still uncommon. Most people develop brain tumors while fighting other kinds of cancer such as lung or colon cancer. When doctors hear galloping sounds they think of horses not zebras- meaning if someone presents with headaches they aren't going to jump to a brain tumor diagnosis. If you're worried about radiation, I would ask for an MRI- no radiation and those can diagnose brain tumors very well. Also, try not to look stuff up in the internet because your mind can start playing tricks on you and make you think you have stuff you really don't. If you don't have a primary care doctor who will listen, find a new one- a doctors job isn't just to treat and diagnose patients- listening to their patients should also be a part of their job. All the best to you
