Brain Tumor.....Post Op Coma?

by els718, Sep 17, 2009 11:37AM
my cousin was rushed to hospital after a blackout (has had a benign operation removed 10 years ago) and the doctors found that she had another tumor so they scheduled her for an operation and removed the tumor which had grown back....
a shunt had been inserted and she later had a reaction to the shunt and so they operated again and put another one in....
when she recovered from that surgery she was not her usual self...
her personality had changed, she developed OCD, lacked social skills and her motor skills had slowed right down to the point that we had to direct her (verbally and physically) how to sit up in bed and she'd lost control of her bowels......

since then they have had to re operate to remove fluid that was formimg around the original tumor which was so deeply embedded into her brain that the could not remove all of it.

since the last operation she has not fully woken up and its been more than a month now since the very last operation. she had opened her eyes and then closed them straight away...the doctors insist she is not in a coma....she is on a respirator and they have now found something on her brain again but won't know what it is until monday.

the doctors have called a meeting with immediate family on Monday and I fear the worst. she is a 24 year old girl and would've have thought she would be young and strong enough to cope with the operations. i feel so helpless and clueless does anyone have any experience or advice on this?

I don't have experience yet. We have just found out that my mother in law has a brain tumor. What I do know it is one of the most frightening things ever. I just wanted to let you know that your cousin and your family will be in my prayers. I can only imagine what you must be going through. God's blessing be with you.  Lynn

thank you Lynn, its nice to know that kind thoughts are with us and ours are with you too..... she was very responsive to herbrother yesterday through touch.....which is fantastic news at the moment..... i wish you and your mother in law all the best and pray that everything will be okay for anyone who is suffering... its such a dreadful thing and makes you realise just how lucky we are and just how much we should appreciate life as its easy to forget.

You are so welcome. Thanks for the prayers for mom. We are hopeful that she will be ok. God's will is all we can really ask for though. So for this I pray. You are right about how easy it is to take things for granted until you risk losing them. Even though I try not too...I still find that I do it more often than I should. I am glad that you have seen some positive signs from your cousin. Stay strong. God bless...Lynn

I am sorry I missed this post before.

I don't have a lot of advise but I lost a lot of family to brain tumors - father, uncle and currently a cousin is battling one. So I understand the helpless.

I wish the best for your family.
