Some doctors may take insurance, and some will not - so you may end up paying the full surgeon's fee now. For my pituitary surgery, my surgeon at the time accepted insurance, but now he does not. The surgeon that did my adrenals did not so I had to pay quite a bit out of pocket. It was around 10k.
Most of the more elite surgeons (the top ones) but not all, do not accept insurance for their fees so expect to pay above what insurance pays. Most of the hospitals are still accepting insurance, so it is just the surgeon's fees... It is rough but in a lot of cases, you get what you pay for and you really want to get the best (pituitary or brain surgery).
Thanks rumpled. I was thinking around 10 to 20k, but it's a question I haven't raised yet with the doctors. And I completely forgot about the hospital costs, for some reason. We have insurance, but I haven't talked with them about this yet.
Thanks for your input.
The surgeon can cost from 10k up and the hospital will cost you from $65k up, depending on if there is an ICU stay, then add 100k.
If you are paying cash, ask for a cash discount and of course, if you look at what insurance pays, it is about 1/3 of that or less with their *arrangements*.
I honestly don't know what the cost of the surgery is. I'm afraid to find out! :)
Anyone else here who has gone through this, willing to share their financial arrangements?
