Do I have a pituitary tumor?

Hi,

I have been on a rollar coaster ride for 6 months now. I have been to 4 doctors and no one seems to know what my problem is.

Symptoms:

no period for 6 months
hot flashes
headache
blurred vision
drunk like feeling
moody
tender breasts with clearish, white discharge but only when squeezed
weight gain of 10 pounds

Hormone tests are all different.
In June when I started the hot flashes, my FSH was 80, Aug was 18 and early oct 8. Prolactin is 7, progesterone is 0.5.   All my thryoid (TSH, T3 and T4) are in normal range.  I do take eltroxin to keep my thyroid normal. 0.2 mg daily.

I am at a loss. I went to emerg this morning as my head will not stop aching. They did a cat scan and said it was normal.

What is up???? Is this all in my head. I feel that there is something wrong. Can they miss the pituitary on a CT scan? Should I have asked for a MRI?

I have an appointment with a Gynacologist in March 08.

I have to agree with the forum... an MRI is a must!!! I did have a pituitary tumor and Iwish you better bedside treatment than I had. The doctor I saw in Hamilton Ont. who did the surgeon was rude!!! He kept me waiting for 3 months until he returned from his mediterranean cruise. I was made to feel like it ws my fault and they asked if I was taking my thyroid pills.
Don't let anyone tell you different. You are your best doctor!!!
Good Luck!!!

Hi there,
MRI is a must... and repeat prolactin blood tests.  The lactation seems odd to me at that low of a level, but something is definately going on... you have almost all of my same symptoms.  My prolactin is now down to 3.4 FINALLY... and I am being treated for my pituitary tumor for only 8 weeks now with Dostinex. (Caborgoline).

Good luck,
Sarah

Thanks for your input guys. I think I am on the right track. I see a pituitary clinic at Toronto West hospital in Dec/Jan. (I am still waiting for a appointment) I finally got my period today. 1st one in 6 months.   What are you guys going about the tumor? Meds?
Do they have side effects?
Why not surgery?

i also agree with crwstar & msfee. push for the mri !! i had breast leakage and done the hormone level and it came back normal. it was when i asked my neurologist if the meds she gave me would cause breast leakage, that i got my mri.my symptoms were breast discharge , moody, headaches, non stop periods, dizzy, fuzzy thinking. when mine was found it was 7mm, be prepared to hear that wont cause your head to hurt. have the mri done ,you need to have it done for peace of mind.and it is a long waiting to see what happens game. there is alot of support here, keep us posted. wish you the best, brainpain

I agree wih Crwstar.

Push for the MRI..I started have massive migrains, blackouts, nausea vomiting, in July 08 I had a CT when I blackout in August 4th and then I black outs again along with nausea and vomiting my family doctor listen to me and he grew concerned as well with the black outs and the migrains since I didn't have none these issues in my medical history..in september 19 Dr, Russell said he wanted the MRI and they found what at the time they thought was 6mm pituitary tumor that I have had another MRI they said that its actually 3mm. So yes get a endocrinologist. And be prepaired to do some waiting its going to be a long ride.

The wonderful ladies on here prepaired me for the waiting game

Hi, sorry to hear what you are experiencing.

I can't speak to the hormones but can speak to the question about a MRI. I had a ct scan last year in december and it showed nothing. At that time I had had a headache for about a month and a half and a lot of other symptoms. I pushed for a MRI and they found the pituitary tumor that I have. It is hard to say exactly what's going on with you, if you are still having issues, especially headaches it is wise to request a MRI.

And if you think you have something going on with your pituitary save yourself a lot of time and seek out a doctor who specializes in the pituitary. A endocrinologist who specializes in them is a good start.

Anybody have anything to add?
