Sharp pain in the head

I have a sharp pain (on the right side) that comes and goes in my head.  It's behind my ear, above the large bone in back of my skull.  The very sharp, stabbing pain hits and then no pain and about 10 sec. later it stabs pain again.  A pain pill takes away the pain for about 20-24 hrs.  My mother told me that she had the exact same thing over 20 yrs ago when she went outside to clean off her car on a very windy, cold day in winter with nothing on her head.  She went to emergency and they x-rayed, blood tests and found nothing wrong.  What is this?

Thank you for your response.  This is not a headache.  Just a quick flash of a stabbing pain....then it's gone.....then about 10 to 15 sec. later, another quick stabbing pain.  My mother having the same thing years ago after being in the cold wind, has told me that hers went away after several weeks and returns only when she is out in the cold wind and has to cover her ears.  Now she says it's much milder of a pain than that first time.  Nobody seems to know what this is or how to get rid of it.  Certainly someone else out there must have had this.  Mystery!!

Perhaps you should see a headache specialist?
It may be a form of migraine - something like that does not show up on scans but still, no one can diagnose on the internet. Usually one sided pain is migraine like.

Did the same thing trigger your headache as triggered your mom's headache?
