Spinal block with Macroadenoma

Spinal block with Macroadenoma

Just wondering if anyone knows if they are able to do epidurals or spinal blocks with a known Macroadenoma? I meet with one of my doctors soon and am hoping to find out from her. I will be having my 4th c-section in June. This will be the first since they discovered the tumor so I am not sure if it will be handled differently. I had heard along the way that it is
safer to be put under vs the possible increase of pressure in the brain from a spinal anything. Any ideas?

Are you speaking of a pituitary macroadenoma? How long has the tumor been there and do they know what type of tumor it is?

I am assuming they have not removed it due to pregnancy but will ASAP?

The pituitary sits inside the dura of the brain and during surgery there can be some chance of CSF leak. But as you have not had surgery yet, it would have to depend on the location of the tumor and where it has gone (up to the optic nerves or down to the cavernous sinus) whether or not they want to disturb it, I would guess.

Are you under the care of a neuro-endo at a pituitary center? If not, I would get to one  and get copies of all your tests. They type of lesion should be known as that means a lot!

I would think that you can still get an epidural. Just be sure to tell the anesthesiologist about the adenoma to be safe. I had many spinal taps done, and they are kind of similar in that they go into the dura of the spine.

Thanks for the replies. Yes its a pitiuitary macroadenoma and my next MRI and consult is a few weeks after baby will be born. We met with our high risk OB Dr. She assured me that the c-section can be done with the spinal block as long as my tumor doesn't bring any mass effect symptoms.

Do you know what type of tumor it is? Has any hormonal testing been done? Are you under the care of a neuro-endo? If not, you really should be.
