What is Encephalomalasia?

My 9 year old grandson has just been diagnosed with Encephalomalasia and I cannot find anything about it on the web.  Can someone please give me an insite of what we are dealing with here? What needs to be done surgery, special classes etc?  I just need some guidance.

Can you confirm the spelling - I can only find encephalomalacia.

"Softening or loss of brain tissue following CEREBRAL INFARCTION; cerebral ischemia (see BRAIN ISCHEMIA), infection, CRANIOCEREBRAL TRAUMA, or other injury. The term is often used during gross pathologic inspection to describe blurred cortical margins and decreased consistency of brain tissue following infarction. Multicystic encephalomalacia refers to the formation of multiple cystic cavities of various sizes in the cerebral cortex of neonates and infants following injury, most notably perinatal hypoxia-ischemic events. It really depends on the extent of the damage as to the damage - what is his doctor saying?
