Chemo can't always be 100% effective against all cancer cells as it depends on how the tumor/cancer responds to the drugs. When one goes into a trial there are strict rules about any other drugs that can be taken. If several drugs were administered then the trial would be of no use as it would not prove anything as far as the effectiveness of the trial drug. If there were any new forms of treatment your Oncologist would be the first to know of them. Kindest regards ....
