A bone scan is usually requested if there is/are symptomatic site/s that can be suspicious of a bone involvement of a primary cancer. The increased uptake may mean possible bone metastasis. However, there are false positive results in bone scan. There may be an increased uptake due to degenerative changes, or from a site of previous fracture.
Hope this helps.
