Secondary Breast Cancer in Liver - Liver resection or RFA survivors

Hi All

My wife has recently been disgnosed as having liver mets 1 year after primary diagnosis. We've since been researching treatment options and are interested in local surgical options.

Are there any survivors out there who have had liver resection or Radiofrequency ablation?

What are the current medical opinions re liver resection and RFA?

Take care

Nigel

Peace and strength to you and your wife, Nigel1965.  We are walking a path much like yours.

No information on RFA; after discovering three small nodes in her liver, our primary MD has recommended a chemotherapy regimen shift from Navelbene to Paraplatin (her fifth, starting with Taxol).  My wife has elected to hold on to the navelbene for another treatment cycle, as it has been very successful in reducing tumors in her lymph nodes.

Hi,

The role of surgery or RFA for metastasis to the liver in breast cancer is controversial. This is because, there is a tendency to have metastasis elsewhere.
Specific populations that do benefit would be patients who have a primary liver cancer, or patients with secondary liver cancer in colon cancer. For the former, things are obvious as this is primary disease, for the latter – this particular group is fairly common that a consideration of surgery has become standard of care.

My wife is on her third round of taxol and gemzar.  Her liver is smaller and we hope we will see progress when she gets CT scans again.  She also has metastasis of the splene and bones.  Our oncologist said if the lesions reduce and size and to just one, I have read that three is okay also, she might recommend this treatment.

I was reading a couple of months ago about a less evasive treatment to the liver but I will have to review all of the websites I have gathered over the last three months.

Best of luck to everyone.  Don't give up ever!
