Stereotactic Core Biopsy

Stereotactic Core Biopsy

I'm 74 years old, due to increase in microcalcification from last, additional imaging was done w/ digital mammograph and ultrasound which showed more diffused amorphous and indeterminate for malignancy calcification in 3x2 cm in overall distribution. No solid or cystic masses. No linear nodular irregularity, no duct ectasia or duct irregularity. No fluid collection or skin thickening. overall, normal-appearing composition of dense glandular tissue and smoothly contoured fat lobules. The radiologist's assessment was Suspicious, BIRADS 4. Suspicious calcifications left breast noted on mammogram.  The radiologist's recommendations were stereotactic core biopsy on two sites (upper outer and central inner). Surgical consultation in case of hematoma secondary to thin compression which may make the procedure technically limited.  Question: should I wait for another 6 months to take another mammogram or go ahead with the sterotactic core biopsy knowing the risk secondary to thin compression.

You might inquire about a different type of biopsy; this would be a good subject to put to the Breast Surgeon when you see him/her. In any case I would proceed with some type of biopsy and not wait another 6 months. If this were an option the Radiologist would not have scored the findings a BIRADS 4. I'm sure the Surgeon will have something to offer as far as what type of biopsy will be the best in your particular case.  Regards ....
