Can u please explain me the stage 3 and 4 of the breast cancer? and what r the effects of not treating with a chemotheropy after the surgery in stage 2
Stage 3 B breast cancer - The tumor grown into the chest wall or skin and may have spread to no lymph nodes or as many as 9 underarm nodes. It may or may not have spread to internal mammary nodes. The cancer has not spread to distant sites.
Stage 4 breast cancer - The primary cancer has spread out of the breast to other parts of the body (such as bone, lung, liver, brain).
The effects of not following up chemotherapy post surgery in case of stage 2 breast cancer cannot be predicted per se and differ from patient to patient. This has to be discussed with the treating physician and both the advantages and disadvantages of taking chemotherapy vs not taking chemotherapy should be enlisted and evaluated before deciding against chemotherapy.
hi,
hopefully bhumi123 has given a good explanation of stages of breast cancer. With regards to chemotherapy, the protocol for treating any breast cancer of any stage is surgical in combination with chemotherapeutic agents or hormonal drugs with respect to some markers like estrogen receptors. Breast cancer at any stage is considered as a systemic disease than a local pathology and hence the need for chemotherapy in the post operative period.
In regards to cancer having spread to the internal mammary nodes. ...does this significantly increase the rate of disease progression ( even if one received radiotherapy to this area?
Stage 3 A breast cancer - The tumor is smaller than 5 cm in diameter and has spread to 4 to 9 undearm lymph nodes or found by imaging studies or clinical exam to have spread to internal mammary nodes, or the tumor is larger than 5 cm and has spread to 1 to 9 axillary nodes or to internal mammary nodes. The cancer hasn't spread to distant sites.
