complete excision after sereotatic needle biopsy

complete excision after sereotatic needle biopsy

I had a mam that showed a cluster 3mm of microclacifcations, which under magnification showed 2 had slight changes. I opted for a sterotactic needle biopsy, and it really appeared that they got all the micrcalcifcations, but the patholgy report came back as- focal atypical hyperplasia bordering on low grade dcis with criboform pattern, and a complete excision is recommended. I am scheduled to have it done Thurs with a wire placed 1st at the same place the biopsy was done to locate the marker they left, and then excision with local anthesia at the surgeons office, He said he will probably take a piece about the size of a quarter.  I am concerned as to whether I should be as worried as I am about clean margins, and about how much pain I will have, I still am sore from the needle biospy and there is a scar or lump the length of where the needle went still, I had the needle biopsy 2 weeks ago.

This discussion is related to cluster of microcalcifications benign?.

This procedure shouldn't be any more painful than the biopsy nor should the soreness afterward. The size you mention is a very small area of excision and shouldn't cause you problems following surgery. You will be given instructions as to what to do after surgery to lessen the discomfort. There are always scars with any type of surgery but these lessen a great deal in time and the lump you feel is probably due to some swelling of the tissue or a hematoma from some internal bleeding in the area of the biopsy. With an area that small I'm sure clean margins can be obtained without difficulty.   Regards .....
