.1 cm invasive cancer

I had a bilateral mastectomy on 3/11.  The doctor just called with the pathology report.  There was a .1 cm invasive cancer identified. The doctor said it was microscopic.  The mastectomy had been planned due to DCIS in the right breast.  He said that the oncologist said that since I had had a mastectomy, that I didn't need to go through any more treatment.  Do you agree with this?  I just want to make sure that I do everything that I need to do.  Thanks for your service.

Dear neatfreakmom, As you have had bilateral mastectomy and the invasive cancer component was so small (1mm) adjuvant chemotherapy would not likely be necessary. If the tumor is ER or PR positive, you should discuss the benefit of adjuvant hormone therapy with your oncologist.

Having had mastectomy, there's certainly no need for radiation. And for such a tiny amount of invasion, the cure rate is so high already that chemo would add nothing. However, since there was invasion, if you didn't have node sampling as part of the mastectomy, it would be something to consider on the side on which the invasion was found. Also, note that you should still wait for the "official" answer from the Cleveland Clinic.
