1st ever mammo, call back mammo, and breast u/s

I had my first ever mammo on Tuesday, I received a call back on Wednesday.  I had the call back mammo yesterday along with an ultrasound.  The only thing that I was told is that the radiologist feels that its a lymph node and to come back in 3 months for another u/s.  The node is 5 mm, which is .5 cm.  From research I did, that is the normal size of a breast lymph node.  If I had cancer, would they have seen a tumor or something besides this lymph node.  Im so confused and scared.  I think they could have clarified theirselves better.

Dear Jenny Wren, Lymph nodes are often present in the breast tissue.  The normal function of a lymph node is to act as a filter.  The normal size of a lymph node ranges from a couple of millimeters to about a centimeter.  When there is infection or inflammation, a lymph node may enlarge.  The purpose of watching an enlarged lymph node in the setting of a negative mammogram is to ensure that the lymph node is not continuing to grow, which may be cause to investigate further.  It is difficult to be more specific and how this (a .5cm lymphnode) relates to your individual situation without ability to view the films, reports and physical exam.  You may, now that you have had time to process the information and have questions, want to check back with your doctor to have them put this finding in context for you.

You are scared and nervous, calm down and think. Cancer does not necessarily depend on the size of a node, lump or tumor, cancer depends on the kind of sells that are in your system.

Do all possible to get a second opinion from a breast specialist, I personalty don't trust radiologist or nurses for a diagnosis, that is a doctors job. Once you have your second opinion from a breast specialist then you can be in peace and wait or do whatever you are told is right for you.

Think it over, you are so scared you are imagining things that a breast specialist can tell you right away what it is you may have.

Regards and take it easy.
