25 year old with breast mass

I went for a physical two weeks ago and my doctor found a Nodule in my upper right breast.  I was sent to have an ultrasound which reveled a 6x9x10 lobular Hypoechoic nodule.  This hurt when the lady was pressing on it.  The report did so no blood flow to the area.  They then sent me to have a mamogram (mammogram) and I got a call today wanting to schedule a biopsy.  Does anyone know if this has malignant characteristics and how concerned should I be.  Also does anyone know a good surgeon around the Raleigh NC area to do the biopsy?  Thanks

Dear BeckyBeth:  It is difficult to speculate on whether this is malignant or not, although breast cancer at 25 is unusual.  Since neither the ultrasound nor the mammogram provided any clarification, the only remaining options are to watch it or biopsy.  A biopsy may be the only way to know for certain.  As you look for a surgeon, see if you can locate one who specializes in breast surgery.  The extra experience may be very helpful to you.

when there's a lump, it needs an answer, either by watching it long enough to see it's not growing, or to do some sort of biopsy. The fact is, neither the ultrasound nor the mammogram told you anything you didn't already know: there's a lump there. Had the ultrasound shown it to be fluid (unusual at your age) you'd know it was a cyst and no worry. That info, along with a sample, could have been obtained without the studies by inserting a needle. Mammograms aren't typically very useful at your age. So the point is you have a lump. At age 25, and with a lobular lump, the chance of it being cancer is very low. The choices are to keep a close eye on it, or to biopsy either by a needle sample or by removing it. You ought to have a better idea of what feels best to you after seeing a breast surgeon. Meanwhile, it sounds of quite low suspicion.

My surgeon was Dr. Kirk Faust with Wake Surgical Associates. In Raleigh.

He did a great job, both with my biopsies and subsequent mastectomies.

I hope yours turns out to be nothing.  I was older than you, no nodule but had suspicious microcalcifications.

I had a stereotactic biopsy done by Dr. Scott Covington at Wake Surgical.

He subsequently performed my mastectomy and more recently some minor mole/cist removal.

I really like him!

Thanks for all the info.  IT has been very helpful.  I have scheduled my consultation and biopsy for next Tuesday.  I will just keep praying that it is nothing. Another question my husband and I have recently begun trying to start a family what happens if I am pregnant with this intefer with the biopsy or surgery if needs?

hi,
cancerous tumors usually have blood flow, which is how they grow, I believe.  if it has no blood flow, I think that is good sign.
