35 and diagnosed with Early breast cancer

Hi, I am 35 years old.  My mother has a history of breast cancer which has now been 11 years.  I just had a mammogram and the radiologist found a line of microcalcifications.  I had a sterotactic bx and the surgeon called me to say that it came back as early breast cancer.  When I had spoke to her prior to the bx she told me that if it did come back positive at least it would be at the cellular level and with surgery we would be able to remove the area.  I did not ask yet, but is that generally the only treatment.  I have not had children and would like to have children, my husband and I have been trying and I am fearful I will need some sort of treatment that will ruin my reproduction system.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is unfortunate to be diagnosed at such an early age but I'm sorry to say that it is not all that rare. The determination as to treatment following surgery will be made by your Oncologist but it need not ruin your reproductive system. I personally know of a young woman who went thru the full course of treatment and became pregnant a couple years later. I'm sure she was not a lone case so don't give up hope about having that baby. Perhaps you may be able to have a consultation with the Oncologist even before your surgery. Treatment will be based upon the Pathology report on the specimen removed so there is no way to know for certain what it may involve. You might also discuss your desire to have children with the Oncologist.   Regards ....
