37 year old breastfeeding mother with non-cystic lump

I am a 37 year old breastfeeding mother and I noticed a peasized lump inmy left upper breast (10:00 position). I  had an ultrasound and a mammogram. Ultrasound indicates it is not cystic. Mammogram when compared to my baseline mammogram from age 35 indicates change to the tissue from then. I will be having a core needle biopsy tomorow and want to know what (other than cancer)might be my diagnosis and whether or not I should have the lump removed even if it is benign at my age. Should I/will I be able to continue breastfeeding my 3 month old?

Dear cindyg, This lump could be a number of things, but having it biopsied would be the next step to evaluate that it is not cancerous.  Having the lump removed would be an option if it is causing discomfort, or if there was question that an adequate sample was not obtained by biopsy.  If the results of the biopsy are benign, and it is not causing any problems you could leave it be.

After this core biopsy, there would be some healing time involved but this should not interfere with breast feeding.  You should of course check with your physician to make sure there is nothing in your individual case that would change that.
