8mm mass and microcalcifications

8mm mass and microcalcifications

I was just told by my doctor that a screening mammogram found an 8mm mass in my right breast, with microcalcifications.  I have a followup diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound in 4 days.  Reading the forums, I see a lot on microcalcification, and I understand what that can mean.
But when a mass exists near the microcalcifications, does this mean that it is likely to be a malignant cancer?  There are no other symptoms, except that since I found out, I am feeling intermittent pain in both breasts, but only when I think about it.
I would appreciate any perspectives, statistics, insights, suggestions, or anecdotes.  I'm getting started on my worrying, but don't have enough data or experience to keep it realistic.
     Thanks, all.

Dear MaryAnn131, Microcalcifications are actually very fine specks of calcium that light up on a mammogram. Sometimes they can be an indication of cancer or precancer. Based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to benign (non-cancerous) causes (such as normal wear and tear on the tissue), a “cluster” of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor.  Microcalcifications themselves are not malignant.
