ADH in left breast, high risk (adoptee) 65 yr

I had stereotactic biopsy, 1st path diagnosis was "severe epithelial hyperplasia".  2nd opinion on path done at a comprehensive breast center said "atypical ductal hyperplasia & fibrocystic changes"  Breast surgeon at that center recommended hook-wire & surgical excision of area.  That was done last week.  Surgeon called and said the path report said no evidence of cancer or ADH.  I had slides sent to Vanderbilt for 2nd opinion...they concurred with the first.  Surgeon now talking about partial breast radiation.  Since the first stereotactic biopsy removed the ADH, isn't radiation overkill.  I have researched widely the side effects of radiation (my husband is currently undergoing proton beam therapy for prostate cancer) and do not want it to the left breast.  I also had a total hysterectomy done 8 yrs ago for severe endometriosis.  I have been on low dose estrogen patch since then.  It seems that radiation now would be overkill.  Has anyone else been in this situation?

The standard treatment for ADH after surgical removal is Radiation and possibly also Hormone Therapy such as Tamoxifen or one of the other drugs with similar action. You need to discuss this with your Oncologist to determine the pros and cons as they apply to your specific condition. It is however the norm as treatment for ADH.    Regards ....

Hi I also had ADH had the lumpectomy got the report back 2 days later and the dr said all of the adh was removed got clear margins and no sign of cancer was ever found. She also told me there was no need for any radiation or tamoxifen.I know every situation is different but I would have to ask why the need for further treatment Best of luck

Thank you for your reply.  After reading all the responses, I have a better feel for what the norm is in treatment recommendations.  I think the thing that stands out most for me is the amount of uncertainty surrounding these decisions.  I wil be asking a lot of specific, personally targeted questions when I meet with my physician today.  Thanks again!

I hope my physician will say the same today.  Since the only ADH found was in the first stereotactic biopsy, my first inclination is to only do close monitoring.  I know that radiation to the left breast carries the possibility of damage to the heart or lungs.  At my age, and as a former runner, that seems like too big a risk for such a small amount of ADH.   I will probably seek out another breast center for another opinion on the treatment recommendations after my appointment today.  Quality of life dictates extreme care in the choice of treatment.  Thanks for your comments!
