Abnormal Mammgram

by KalleK, Sep 01, 2007 02:00PM
Hi-

I am a 35 year old with a history of breast cancer (mom post meno at 59).

I was recently called back for a diagnostic mammogram and sonogram after my first screening mammo.

The radiologist said he recommends I have a needle biopsy guided by mamm because he sees indeterminate microcalcifications. He said his gut tells him they are benign but you need a biopsy to be sure.

I am very nervous. I picked up the reports yesterday because my gyno referred me to breast specialist. In the report it says the calcifications are "mildly pleomorphic" I looked this up online and it seemed to mean malignancy.

I had a fibroadenoma removed about 8 years ago from where it seems the same area these calcfications are (i'm just guessing because that's where they put the sono probe.) The radiologist mentioned maybe it could be a calcified fibroadenoma. Is that possible??

Below is what my report reads. Any info you can give me I would appreciate. Why do I need to go to a specialst. Why can't I just get the biopsy. Please help! iI have cysts too. Do I need them aspirated. DO i have a good chance this could be benign.

"Today's additional views confrim the presecnce of calcifications in the upper aspect of the R breast. The calcifications are mildly pleomorphic. They spane approx 7mm. They are indeterminate.

Bilatera Ultrasound

In the left breast 11 oclock periareolar region, there is a deeply situated simple cyst 3.0x1.0x2.3

In the right breast 12 oclock awis subareolar region there is a deeply situated simple cyst 2.1x0.7x2.4

The cysts would account for low denisty masses demonstarted mammographically.

Impression:

INDETERMINATE MICROCALCIFICATIONS, UPPER ASPECT OF THE RIGHT BREAST. BIOPSY IS RECOMMENDED. THIS COULD BE ACHEIVED BY STEROTACTIC GUIDED VACUUM ASSISTED BIOPSY.

THE BILATERAL CIRCUMSCRIBED MASSES CORRESPOND TO SIMPLE CYSTS.

BIRAD CAT 4.

My wife, age 66, had been diagnosed with DCIS and they performed a stereotactic biopsy and removed the microcalcifications by vacuum.  This was done in both breasts.  It was determined that there was malignancy in her right breast Stage 0.  The surgeon did lumpectomies of both breasts and confirmed that the malignancy was confined to the right breast.  My wife will begin radiation therapy next week, 5 days a week for 6 weeks.  The doctor says that with the radiation treatment, there is only about a 5 percent chance of a recurrence whereas, without the radiation, there is about a 45 percent chance of a recurrence.  My wife weighs 120 lbs and is a 34 DD.  The incisions were made on the sides of her breasts.  It has been about two weeks and she has healed very well.  My wife doesn't get too excited about things and has faith in her Lord that things will be okay.  I am the worrier and that is why I am on this forum.  I have talked to a lot of people and asked a lot of questions.  I noticed that you had not had a response to your question and realize how frustrating that can be because I have hungered for answers that did not come.  I don't know if my response will be of any comfort to you but I feel comfident that your case will be okay.  God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.  I had a ruptured abdominal aortic anneuryism last November.  Most people do not survive when their aorta ruptures, but for some reason I lived for approximately 1 hour before getting on the operating table.  Everybody at the hospital called me Miracle Man and that God had reason for me to stick around.  Maybe , one reason, was to get on line today and write to you. You are still a young women and the odds are in your favor that yours will be benign.  We were told that the high majority of this type of biopsy is benign (around 90 percent) but that if malignant, you are catching it at its earliest stage.  I don't want to build up your hopes, but I have confidence that the Lord is sending you a message too.  I will be praying for you.  Please let us know how things turn out.
