Dear obed:  This is certainly not the "typical" situation.  Dense tissue describes the regular breast tissue.  Recovery can vary from person to person but since this was an "unexpected" procedure, it may be that you had more surgical trauma than average - thus the bruising etc.  If you have an odor, you should inform your doctor.

If you mean "needle localization" as opposed to sterotactic biopsy, it's normal to leave the needle in, and for the surgeon to follow it down to the area in question, in which case it's expected to have an incision 2-4 inches,or so. If it had been intended as a stereotactic biopsy, where the radiologist does the whole procedure, then it is unusual not to be able to withdraw the needle, but I'd not draw any conclusions about it.With an open biopsy it's very common to have bruising. An unusual odor might mean something, and you ought to let your surgeon know about it. Soreness is common and can last a few days or a few weeks.
