Age/overweight hindrance to use of own tissue for reconstruction

by beduzzina, May 26, 2002 12:00AM
My friend was told her own tissue was unsuitable for use in a TRAM procedure. The plastic surgeon told her that because of her age, 3 childbirths, overweight, etc. she would only be a candidate for saline reconstruction.   I am facing a mastectomy and wonder if my age (66), 2 childbirths, prior ovarian cancer surgery, would also preclude me from using my own tissue.  Thus would I  also be limited to saline reconstruction?

Dear beduzzina:  Whether or not TRAM reconstruction can be effectively done depends on many factors, including the quality of the donor tissue and the plastic surgeon.  A plastic surgeon would examine the donor tissue and make a determination based on his assessment.
