Amorphous Calcifications

Amorphous Calcifications

A recent mammogram (2010) found "amorphous calcifications";  the CAD could not rate this because my previous films were not available to compare.  I brought in my films (from 2007).  They said nothing changed.  shouldn't ALL "amorphous calcifications" be diagnosed even if they were there three years prior?

Amorphous Calcifications are always considered "suspicious" and most times are biopsied. I believe about 30% do reveal a malignant finding after biopsy. Perhaps the area showed no change over the 3 years between Mammograms.   Regards ....

Thank you for your response. My doctors Nurse is refusing to request a diagnostic, be cause they are "only" calcifications".  That is why I asked.  My mother's sister has breast cancer and I would just feel better getting them checked out.  I don't know what my next step is.  Any suggestions?  Should I just leave it and rely on my yearly mammograms.

The only real difference between the screening and diagnostic Mammograms is that the Diagnostic is done when the Radiologist is on site and is read immediately in case there is a need for additional studies .... the screening is done and read at a later date by the Radiologist. If there was a need for additional films such as magnification or compressed views that would have been part of the Radiology Report that was sent to your Physician. You should speak directly to your Dr. .... the Nurse does not have the final word when it comes to ordering tests. You might request that he/she go over the report with you face to face and explain it all. If you get no results and are still concerned then make an appointment with a Breast Specialist and go for an exam and take your films with you.    Regards .....

For what it's worth, personally I would definitely pursue this issue with your doctor,
as japdip advises. It may very well end up being benign, but I wouldn't want to take
a chance on missing something or not catching it early. Ultimately, YOU have to be
the one who's comfortale with your care.
Wishing you all the best and sending you a hug (     ),
