Dear wondering12804: It is not uncommon for an abnormality to show up in a screening mammogram. In these cases, spot compression is often recommended to further characterize the abnormality. It could be as simple as some tissue having folded over on itself and with compression will smooth out. If the abnormality remains, additional evaluation, such as ultrasound, may be recommended to further characterize the abnormality. Dense breast tissue is very common in young premenopausal women (noting from your profile that you are 41) and can make interpretation more difficult. Most of these abnormalities turn out to be benign but it is appropriate to follow up to be sure.
