Assymetric density

Assymetric density

My mother just had her mammography and she has to past another one because they have found asymmetric density in both breasts. Since my mother already have two sisters that had breast cancer (one died 4 years ago and the other one as been in remission for 1 year), could you tell me what are her chances of having breast cancer also.  She is really nervous about the results and she is convince that she has breast cancer.

Dear Pascale, Asymmetric density means that there is an area that does not appear normal as compared to the rest of the tissue. It means that further investigation, such as a spot compression and/or ultrasound are needed to further characterize the area. This could be as simple as some tissue folding over on itself in the first mammogram and this will resolve with spot compression. It is not uncommon to be called back for further evaluation. It does not necessarily mean cancer. It just means that further evaluation is needed.
