Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia

Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia

I had a fine needle biopsy on a new lump last Tuesday. Dr called Thursday and said it was abnormal, Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia. Next step was to remove the lump. He wanted me to have a mammogram first to make sure there were no other issues. I had this done Thursday and the Radiologist said she didn't see anything...on the mammo or ultrasound! All she could see was an area of thickening. My question is, has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering if the surgeon will still want to remove tissue from the area. I will see him tomorrow afternoon to follow-up, but I really don't want to have un-necessary surgery. I have history of blood clots and surgery brings up a whole nother issue!

Thanks!!

This surgery is not unnecessary .... your biopsy yielded the diagnosis of ADH and this is often referred to as a pre-cancerous condition. Actually is it a condition that increases your risk of developing breast cancer by a considerable percentage. The treatment of this condition is always wide excision of the area possibly followed by radiation and also hormone therapy if the estrogen response is positive.   Regards ....

I have had surgery because of atypical ductal hyperplasia along with other issues that I won't go into.  But I have a lot going on that at this point is benign.  My surgeon did a lumpectomy.  Exactly what is a wide excision of the area?  And I didn't have radiation.  Am I being undertreated?
