Am a 27 year old woman diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Have also discovered a lump in my right breast that needs to be removed. It can be tested only after it is surgically removed. I want to know whether the risk of cancer is higher for patients with autoimmune disorder. Is there anything I have to alert my surgeon to?
There is no causal link between the development of breast cancer and presence of an autoimmune disorder. There are specific syndromes that are related to a genetic defect in the tumor suppressor gene that predispose one to develop breast cancer. Examples include Cowden’s syndrome and Li-Fraumeni Syndrome.
You can mention to your surgeon all pertinent medical history.
Good luck on your biopsy.
