BIRAD 4 Microcalification

I am having a biopsy done on my right breast due to having Birad 4 microcalification , my question is I had Uterus Cancer in 1986 and had a total hysterectomy and been taking premarin for 22 years, by taking HRT for so many years does it increase my risk for breast cancer?

Hi Debbie ... yes, unfortunately it has been proven that HRT does indeed increase one's risk for developing breast cancer. Certainly you are not alone as HRT was administered quite freely in the past. This doesn't necessarily mean that your biopsy will result in a finding of cancer. Microcalcifications indicate that the breast tissue is responding to something within the breast that isn't normal; NOT always cancer though. If HRT is prescribed today it is recommended to be a the lowest dose possible and for a very short time.
