Back again with a question about Chemo

by womanfromcanada, Jul 08, 2009 11:53AM
Hello,

As I said earlier, I was diagnosed with invasive breast carcinoma. Had surgery on July 9th (lumpectomy). No lymph node involved. size of the tumor is 1.1x1.5x2.0. Margines are clean as well.

Saw oncologist today and he is recommending chemo. He said I have a choice between AC or CMF. He said because you are young , I would recommend AC but the choice is yours. He said the difference between AC and CMF is about 1.5% in survival rate.

He also said that CMF does not usually causes complete hair loss and it's side effects are milder than AC. After chemo, I will get radiation.

Now it is a difficult decision to make. Do not really know which one to select for my treatment. AC or CMF? It would be appreciated if you can give me some information.

P.S.
I asked him about OncoType test. At first, he hesitated to offer that to me but eventually he said he will do it and I am eligible to have it done for free (they still send the tumor to the US for testing). He believes that it will come back with a high number rather than low.

Dear womanfromcanada:  There are various chemotherapy regimens that may be offered for adjuvant treatment of breast cancer.  Determination of the regimen best suited for the individual would be based on a number of factors  and there are a number of regimens that would be considered acceptable treatment. The OncoType test is used to help make decisions about whether or not to proceed with adjuvant chemotherapy.  It does not help in the determination of which chemotherapy regimen to give.

Ask your oncologist what the added cure rate would be with chemo. For me it was 3%. I asked the Radiation Oncologist the same. The radiation increased my survival by 30%.

This is important information to have when making your treatment choices.

I am a healthcare professional but not an MD with the Cleveland Clinic.
