Being sent for MRI after follow up

Being sent for MRI after follow up

I went in for my regular mammogram today and stayed for additional testing after the initial reading.  The radiologist recommended both additional x-rays and an ultrasound.  After the follow-up tests, the radiologist was concerned about an "increase in density" in my left breast from my mammogram last year.  The ultrasound technician found a fluid cyst and was not concerned.  I am 42 and have no previous history of breast problems.  The radiologist recommended a MRI instead of waiting for 3 to 6 months to find out if there is a problem.  I should have asked questions, but I was afraid to and wanted to leave.  Does the MRI recommendation mean that the radiologist is concerned the "increase in density" is cancer or just concerned that he can't tell what it is?  Is the MRI the best option for follow-up in this case?

A breast MRI takes all the guess work out. I have had several because of the thickness of my breast. I wouldn't worry, but I think its great, just go have it done, It will give you great peace. Carol

I agree with Carol; Breast MRI sees more clearly than mammo or US although all the tests are used together to come to a definite conclusion. No doubt it's been ordered to obtain the best view possible since density is a problem. Keep in mind that biopsy and biopsy alone is the only way to diagnose cancer. Where 3-6 month follow-ups were recommended before; MRI is becoming very popular now and often eliminates the waiting for a re-check.  Good Luck .....

I really appreciate you responding to my questions.  I hope the MRI gives a better picture.  I have read some things about MRIs that make it sound like they are not that reliable and give a fair percentage of false positive results.   It would be nice to have a definitive test since I have a high deductible on my insurance and will be paying for it out of pocket (double grrrr).  Just want to get it over with.  Thanks for your help:)
